    Default Old Habits Die Hard

I don't when the last time was that I had a buyer call me and ask if I am an ASHI inspector but I got two of them today. On one of thew calls, the woman barked that question out right after I answered the phone...."Are you an ASHI inspector?" To her shock and horror, I told her I was not. She was quite gruff and said she would call me back. Please don't.

I should have told her I that I am not an ASHI inspector but I am a bikini inspector..........just to see what her reaction would be. The best ideas always pop into my head when it's too late.

    Hey Nick,

I have read your posts over the years and I think you are a competent inspector and would qualify for ASHI membership.

I think you coud pass the NHIE exam and demonstrate the ability to create acceptible reports.

When I first started inspecting I joined a local society whose purpose was intense continuing education via monthly newsletters but the general public was not aware of this society or impressed by membership in it.

Many callers asked if I were an ASHI member. I had to say no and I lost the job. So I took the NHIE and submitted samples of my reports and qualified for membership.

There are good inspectors who are not ASHI members.

But you have to be a good inspector to be an ASHI member.

You only need a checkbook to be an ASHI inspector...

After 250 Inspections, (and a check) you can advertise that you are a "good" ASHI Inspector.

All the selling of titles within this industry has certainly done one thing... ensure none of them matter for squat.

In 10 years of inspecting I can count on one hand the number of times I've been asked about membership in a national or local association.

Associations (national and local) have a lot to offer as far as CEUs and overall education. Just don't expect one to make or break your business.

I'm not sure what the deal is, but I've had 3 people in the last month ask if I was an ASHI inspector. Before this last month, I probably had 1 or 2 a year. Maybe ASHI is boosting their advertisements?

Luckily, I've been able to convert 2 of the 3 over to using an independent.

    Joseph,

I try to stay out of all the Associaction bashing but I gotta say something here.

Here in California it is all the INACHI guys that are the Lowballer $99.00 inspect any house, anytime and leave out half the defects.

Like Politics and Religion keep the Association bashing to yourself!!

    Ken,

Sorry about this but ... ABSOLUTELY WRONG on that one.

I know MANY ASHI inspectors who I would consider to be "good inspectors", however, I also know just a many ASHI inspectors who I would NOT consider to be "good inspectors" ... "ASHI inspectors", yes, but NOT "good inspectors".

I get 5 to 10 bookings a month directly from the ASHI website.

As stated before its not association membership that makes an inspector but rather the quality of the inspector and the use of his knowledge.

Simply; I do not rely on any association for work if I had to I would be starving.
