Default Unfinished flue in the attic...

This was a 2008 house, gas factory built fireplace. Didn't even penetrate the roof.

What? You want it to go outside? That's not the way we do things in CA.

It's funny, this was a petty new house and everyone left, agents, clients etc. because the house was so new and nothing was coming up...right before I went into the attic.

They didn't by chance decide to install a vent-less fireplace did they?

To be more technically correct, it's an improperly terminated vent.
The flue is the space inside the vent.
