Default Supply air to bedroom closets

I did a 1986 home today that had abandoned all the floor ducts for overhead ducts and none of the closets had registers. Some were walk-in closets that were pretty good size. How big does a bedroom closet have to be before it requires a duct from the HVAC system?

I don't believe HVAC is required in any closets, as they are not considered "habitable".

The reason I asked is that these closets were much hotter than the rooms and you can't leave the doors open because the closets had door activated light switches. The insulation in the attic was normal and most homes with large closets I see have registers. Thanks for the input.

I bet there weren't any floor registers in them before.

I did not pull the carpet and look. However, most of the homes around here have registers in the walk in closets whether they are floor or ceiling. Thanks for the info though. I was not sure if they were required or not. Now I know.

While walk-ins by definition are not considered habitable spaces, if they are large enough to change the heat loss/gain numbers considerably they should be heated/cooled. Walk-ins that abut outside walls of the home should at least be heated in cold climate areas.
