Default Specifying hold-back of natural wood siding above roofs

Does anyone have a source specifying the required hold back of natural wood siding above roof coverings?

    Thanks.

Thanks. I also found this, with a diagram, see pp14:

Thank you both. That 1/2" recommendation was a surprise.

Yep, I don't like it one bit.

Michael, your link in post #5 is dead.

BW, Try fixing the cut & paste error/addy (removing the erroneous "inspectionnews.net/home_inspection/www/" ) like this:

I think it bears noting that the cedar shakes / shingles are not really just wood siding but roofing materials adapted for use in siding and are naturally decay resistant. The 1/2" clearance would ONLY apply to that specific product, not traditional wood siding.

    Thanks HG- got it.

Jim-- I agree that the 1/2" clearance is only for shakes and shingles. The only other type of siding I'm aware of that allows the 1/2" clearance is vinyl. I don't like the minimal clearance allowance for at least a couple of reasons:
1)Water may wick up into the wall, especially if debris bridges the small gap
2)Roofers will have more trouble replacing flashing down the road, so they will be more prone to taking shortcuts.
3)The 1/2" clearance disappears when multiple layers of roofing are installed.
