Safest place to put a fireplace is in the garage, IMO.

Growing up, we had a large 2 car detached garage my dad used to store his tools and use as a work-shop (he was a general contractor).

He had a wood burning stove he used all winter long. He never threw away wood scrapes from the job. Always brought them home and had one of us stack them for winter use.

Also, not allowed in a garage as per NFPA 211 and IRC2006.

Just raise the hearth up at least 18 inches and you should be good to go! (Insert winky face here)

That would be an ideal feature in my area. Nail down the garage door and you could house a student in there. He can burn a bit of paper to keep warm.

Obviously that is not a fireplace. It's a masonry storage compartment for asphalt shingles.

At some point in time the homeowners used this as a finished room. Is the garage door new, there was probably a framed wall built into the door opening until they decided to put the house on the market.

I've seen this where a backyard fireplace/barbeque area was incorporated within a wall of a added garage they intended to use as a bonus room.

Now that Marc said that, if you look at the pictures again, it doesn't look like the floor slopes towards the OH door as required in a garage.

Some people like to use their garage for entertaining guests. I guess they wanted to create some ambience.

Owner just probably would like to do wood projects or work on a car. Just pull the car out of the garage closest to the fireplace and it doubles as a workshop. Would probably never cause a problem if utilized correctly, but that's the gray area.

I put one in my garage back in 75 but I converted the garage to a family room first
