Default Is IN the new DIY site????

Is it just me, or have there been a lot of non-inspector people logging in to get DIY advice, or try to get answers to questions that are really not home inspection related?

I probably get about 5+ calls per year from homeowners (non-clients) who just have an issue in their home and are looking for advice or guidance. I'll help them as much as I can over the phone since I answered the call. Some people pick up the phone and call, some find InspectionNews and start a thread looking for advice.

Does anyone think Brian should create a forum dedicated to DIY?
    I'm not telling, I'm asking.

Does anybody else feel that there is potential liability attached to answering someones questions?

Years ago I learned that as a contractor giving detailed solutions to a problem leaves the contractor exposed if things went wrong, since the contractor is a lic. professional they were relying on and directing their efforts. Something like a How To book that is wrong and the person is injured or property damaged as a result of following the books directions.

I really doubt that someone is going to go after an individual on an internet forum for giving an opinion on something.

I think I am going to ignore all of the posts that are from non home inspectors or ones just asking for how to advice. Maybe they will go away.

I agree with Jack. With all the internet experts in the various chat forums it would be difficult/ if not impossible for some shark lawyer to prove some liability. I can only imagine what the "experts" are telling people in the health related forums - "that rash around your private parts most likely isn't STDs, its prickly heat rash, make a poultice from cayenne pepper seeds and apply until it goes away"

Yes it is, or could be, or may not be. You might try touching it to see if its hot or not.

Could you define hot? cold? black? and wire? Not sure what you mean.

JF, there's a post right now in (I think) structural. I was wondering why inspectors were asking some of those questions. Then I looked at their posts, 1. BH should just make their own forum.

Oh no, don't start that because he'll post 5 solid pages of text, maybe even multiple back-to-back posts

I have added a new section on the site where DIYers can post their questions.
    http://www.inspectionnews.net/home_i...me-buyers-diy/

Hopefully this will help to separate the inspector to inspector and DIY to inspector questions.

If you know of threads or see a new post that is obviously not from an inspector please let me know so I can move it to it's proper location.
