    Question Scary looking vent pipe.

This is in original 1930 oil furnace converted to gas. The flue pipe has a box or some type of damper installed. It is open on the bottom, I would think that something is missing here. Has anybody seen anything like this before?

I believe what you have there is a draft diverter that is on vent instead of part of furnace unit itself.

That is an old draft diverter & should of been capped off so the new gas furnace will draft properly.

If that is a homemade drafthood it is as illegal as the day is long.

It has to have an AGA stamp on it to be approved, besides a double acting barometric would be much more effective.
