    Default Return air too close?

Return air looks somewhat close. Thinking it may redirect draft.

Yeah it is too close. I see that about 4-5 times a year. Kinda makes you wonder about the AHJ during construction and time for finals, COA's.

The rule is return air vents should be located no less than 10 feet from an open combustion source. That looks less than 10 feet.

    Personally, I'd ignore it.

I know you are a smart man mark but did you actually look into the "return air vent". Where it is placed is extremely unusual in the corner of the living room. I was thinking it was more like what we call a bath trap as in a hole cut out for termite treatment behind a tub or shower.

    Just curious.

I'd be more concerned about the distance of the mantel from the top of the firebox.

    Ted,

    I had the same thought.

You sure it wasn't just a make up air vent opening up into the garage?

Judging by the number of holes in the thing...yes, it was.

    Hi Guys,
I am new to this group so don't be too hard on me! If this is a return air intake couldn't the problem be easily fixed by making it a high sidewall return?
