Default Deck ledger fastened through cords of truss joist

I inspected a house to day that had a deck ledger plate bolted with through bolts through the top and bottom cord of a truss joist that was used for the rim joist. I know that a truss joist can be used as a rim joist but TJI recommends and details a truss joist rim board for when a deck ledger plate is to be fastened to it. Technical help would not say if what I found was acceptable or not. The visible inside web was not beefed up. Does anyone have any info as to weather this is permitted.
    Thanks, Herb

Your description is not precise enough for me to say anything positive. Do you have photos?

The NC required 4 hour CE class on Deck Inspections had that same scenario. They said it required additional support as the I beams are not designed to support a deck bolted to it. I'll see if I can find more info and post it.

Top and bottom flanges cannot be cut or drilled.

I imagined that the TJI people would want that through bolted. I'm surprised they don't mention that in the diagram.

Unless specifically included in the design, field modifications to the top and bottom chords or webs are expressly forbidden by manufactured truss installation guides. That would include drilled holes.

As far as I know, standard trusses are designed to support vertical forces not horizontal. Unless the truss was designed and installed specifically for the side load of a deck ledger

The above statements are expressed solely as my opinion and in all probability will conflict with someone else's.
