    John,

That's not the main stair is it?

That handrail is more 'fireman's pole' at the station house than a 'handrail'.

    Why, yes it is.

John, was that house a trinity? I've seen similar handrails in those spiral staircases.

Yep. And no way to reach the flat-ish 3-story roof except straight up from the ground, dang it.
Client was very understanding about that, unlike some people.

This spiral staircase has a similar pole. This was in a 70's A-frame house. Roof starts at ground level.

Sounds like the camera on a pole might have been helpful on that inspection. I use a cheap Fuji camera that has a 10 sec timer, or you can shoot a little video, pole out the window.

I tell people to look it as the "glass is half full" - It's not a bad staircase.... it's a REALLY nice ladder

    John,

The difference with that spiral staircase is that it has a handrail (not counting that center-pole handrail), whereas the one John posted does not have any other handrail.

I'd hate to be the one trying to move furniture in or out of that upper level. I guess that's where knock-down furniture comes in. Just no couches or box-spring matresses.
