Default Fire wall between living space and barn

    Hi,

I'm looking at a house which needs renovating and am wondering if a barn is the same as a garage? Here in Maine we are required to use 5/8 fire rated sheetrock between living space and garage. Is this the same for a barn? Do I need a steel fire door or can a solid wood door be used?

    Thanks,
    Doug

If the barn is attached to the house the answer is "Yes", treat it the same way as an attached garage.
Check with your local code officials regarding the fire rating of the door. Most require a minimum of a 20 minute door. It could be steel or wood as long as the rating is met.

Do you really want a door to connect the barn to the house? OK if you are converting the barn to a workshop, treat it like a garage. If you plan to house livestock in there, seal that space off from your living space.
