Default Need a name for this component.

Just looking for the real name for this, I've heard it called a number of things but looking for its real or technical name.

I refer to it as a "mixing box" for supply air.

    Wow...more names.

I call it a plenum or plenum box
I wasn't satisfied with any of the other names i have heard so I just fell back on this definition.
    Plenum:
-An assembly or meeting with all members present.
-A condition, space, or enclosure in which air or other gas is at a pressure greater than that of the outside atmosphere.
Anyhow, It has worked so far with no complaints. I just didnt feel it was correct and dont want to look like a shmuck.

My vote is for a distribution box; I use that term all the time. I use the term plenum for either the main starting point for the supplys or returns nearest the air handler. By the by, distribution boxes, at least around here, are not liked. Many a HVAC person has told me that they add a considerable amount of restriction to the system. It is like adding many, many feet to the duct run.

    Hey Marc,
I have always called them plenums. However, that is an interesting shape.

I use Plenum and or Distribute box. Who the hell came up with duct board, What is the word "board" meaning. Was it taken from using the bay area between joist boards as ducts......

No, duct board is a material they make plenum boxes and distribution boxes out of. It's like a light weight material made from fiberglass that can be cut and moleded into shapes and gives a certain R value as well.

Assuming that the duct on one side is air from a blower and it enters the plenum for splitting to the other two ducts . . it is a "boom" box.

AND as others have said it is high pressure drop, inefficient and the wrong type of duct tape is used. The tape used will deteriorate in about five years. It needs to be UL listed tape for duct seal and construction.

Also it doesn't look like duct board to me, it looks more like Styrofoam, maybe fabricated out of a foam cooler. Duct Board will typically have a foil face and will often have markings on the exterior.

Its a distribution box, mixing box made of duct board. Probably one of the worst materials to move air through the house. Havent these manufacturers ever heard of fibrosis???

If it is indeed duct board there is little cause for concern of fibrosis. Fiber duct and fiberglass duct liner have been used in duct systems for longer than I have been alive. They provide a good thermal barrier and are effective in noise attenuation.

Properly installed they are a decent option to metal duct with liner.

I am still not convinced it really is duct board though.

The problem is it is a dust collector and it releases fibreglass. Many people do not want fibreglass lined ducting.

With all due respect I am a insulator by trade. I insulate mechanical systems. Duct liners fail 99 percent of the time, over time. When this happens it releases fibers 100% of the time. The main reason for using duct board to move air in your house, is because its dirt cheap. Duct liners in large duct usually fail and they end up wrapping in duct wrap. The first thing I would do if I bought a new house would be to hire someone that doesn't deal with duct board.
