Default drain line through a floor joist

I came across an ABS drain line that ran through a floor joist yesterday. Code check says it's o.k. (per man specs) if it is in the middle of the joist. Which it is. Saying "big holes" are o.k. in the middle of the joist. To me "big hole" seems like a big gray area. According to the pic in the code check book, quite a big hole is allowed. Comments, wisdom?
    Thanks,
    Steve

If its an I-joist, then the holes can be pretty large. If its a regular lumber joist - not so much, and there are several criteria for size and placement.
