    Default Bad Legislation

At their last meeting the California state senate approved a bill that will become effective July 1, 2012. All home inspectors in California shall be registered state licensed architects. I believe this law may soon spread to other states if enforced?

Wow! I definitely agree w/ the "Bad" part and am having trouble believing that even politicians could be capable of this. It is absurd enough that I have no concern about the precedent spreading. The recent Home Inspection licensing laws in WA St preclude anyone w/o that license from doing complete inspections. How will an architect inspect mechanical, electrical, ( all the various disciplines), as well as someone specifically educated for the tasks. I have a Realtor friend who used to proudly state that she used engineers for her home inspections, ( insinuating a much higher quality standard ). I asked her what engineer she used - - - a structural, mechanical, electrical, geo-tech, electronic, bio-tech ?), and her reply was I just call the firm and they send somebody out. Admittedly an architects education would come closer to the task than an engineer because of the generalist nature of their education, but they are designers, not installers. They hire engineers to make their designs functional.

The senate only, or both houses and the governor?

That would be like having the fox guarding the hen house ... the architects trying to find the problems they created!

Shucks, I thought I was going to HAVE to retire on July 1, 2012. Funny, I didn't have any doubt that our legislators could have passed this. I guess I have to keep on working because our legislators are running me into the poor-house.
