    Default Electric furnace

I am a new inspector in NYS and just getting started. I was looking at a house that my daughter might be interested in purchasing. (walked through at an open house) The house has an electric furnace with a heat pump. What I noticed was a 6 to 8" duct running from the cold air return to the supply plenum above the furnace. In the duct is what I'm calling a damper with a weight on a rod that can be adjusted. I assume you slide the weight up and down to adjust how far the flap or damper will open inside the duct. What is the purpose of this duct? The furnace was installed in 2004 and has a humidifier mounted on the cold air return with a small duct running to the supply side. Thanks!

Sounds like a bypass duct with a barometric damper. Were there two or more thermostats controlling one furnace?

I believe there was only one.
