    How to avoid that poor design in the future.

    Slip, trip, and fall ... down the stairs.

    Sue everyone related to the design and construction of that idiocy.

    They'll never do *that* stupid thing again (*other* stupid things, probably, but not *that*).

    I agree with Wayne. The closet door should have been installed around the corner.

    *IF* "possible". It may not have been possible. I agree with you and Wayne, that was my first thought, then I thought 'Maybe it was not possible.' - structural framing, etc., could be in the way.

    Two things: 1. There is no such thing as a dumb question.
    2. Your photo shows an obvious hazard to occupants and definately should be written up in your report.
