Default Requirments for 2004 GFCI outlets in garage

No GFCI outlet in basement garage for a house built in 2004. Was this a requirement ?? Is there a list of NEC codes for just GFCI outlets from previous years? TKS

If the outlet has to be GFCI protected outlet.

SM - Did you not open the PDF that Jerry Peck posted and you said "Thanks" for?

Also depends upon what the AHJ required/enforced at the time for that property.

When it comes to safety and electrical, today's requirements are my baseline. I call it out whether the house is 1 year or 100 years old.

By the way, the "age" of the home when it comes to code compliance is not necessarily the same date as when the construction permit was approved. The permit date determines which code cycle governs construction.

The question should have been about receptacles, not outlets. Receptacles are outlets, but not all outlets are receptacles. GFI protection is rarely required for lighting outlets.

All answers based on unamended National Electrical codes.

So if a home is 50 years old you call out things like no AFCI's as a defect???

To address the first part of the question - this is from the 1996 NEC (oldest I have on my computer, but this was *not* a new requirements in 1996):
    - 210.52(g) Basements and Garages. For a one-family dwelling, at least one receptacle outlet, in addition to any provided for laundry equipment, shall be installed in each basement and in each attached garage, and in each detached garage with electric power. See Sections 210-8(a)(2) and (a)(4).

So, yes, there *should have been a receptacle outlet in that basement*, and, as the chart shows, that receptacle outlet *should have been - should be - GFCI protected*.

    Greg,

You are welcome. Here is an AFCI chart.
(I just noticed that the heading on that chart is "Receptacle" Outlets, and that I need to change that to just "Outlets" as it changed from "receptacle" outlets only to "outlets" in 2002.)
