    OK, Oldsters. Anyone have a clue what this things is? House is 124 years old.

    Actually they are not that old and are commonly referred to as "Rate-of-Rise" detectors. They respond to rapid changes of temperature such as caused by a fire just starting out, as well as a fixed temperature. A common way to test them is to just place your hand on the unit. The change of temperature from your hand would set set them off.

    My wife always tells me that I have cold hands, I wonder it that works for me.

    And, these older rate-of-rise heat detectors are a major PIA for firefighters since they often false alarm with changes in weather / barometric pressure. Climate change will probably cause them to all go off together sometime in the next two or three thousand years. Better add it to your reports...

    It's not 124 but definitely a heat detector that was in use since at least the early '60s
