Default Insulation on Crawl space wall

I've only seen this type of insulation once. 1960 split home had this insulation on the walls of the crawl. It appears like in was sprayed on put not sure. Also, I think it used to be white and is now black. Any one knows what is call? also any advice on whether or not it should be tested for mold etc. Crawl space was dry at the time of inspection.

I call it SOS! Sprayed On _hit! We see it all the time in our area and every inspector I know hates it. What I normally see is a sprayed on cellulose product that is gray in color.

Scott, First of all Happy Farther day to you. Thanks so much for responding to my note. I think I too will hate seeing this spray-on insulation.

Is the crawl floor concrete or just soil with covering? What is wrong with that spray-on?

Ya can't see those little critters going up to feast on the wood framing! Also in the south it tends to absorb moisture and we all know that crawls are dry as a bone....

We are all seeing more and more closed crawlspaces as well as closed and conditioned. The insulation on the walls however does require a 4 -6 inch gap at the top to permit inspections for unwanted pests and gremlins. There should also be a high quality vapor barrier on grade at the same time and it should be wrapped up the walls and piers a foot or so and sealed.

Hi Jeff, Thanks for responding. I did call that out and advised that they needed a vapor barrier in the crawl, as well as improving the ventilation.
