Yeppers, there is a reason they are rated for 'Outdoor Use' ...

Where to start - improperly installed in an improper location without sufficient clearances ... corrective action is to remove from attic and locate in a proper outdoor location.

The wiring between the two units was thermostat cable or what other type? I ask because all of those that I have inspected called for THWN or similar copper conductors between the two units as that supplied the operating power to the indoor unit - thermostat cable was a no-no in those installations.
