Default The ants go marching one by one hurrah hurrah...

The ants go marching one by one... or in droves. There are a number of species of ants that are a nuisance pest to homeowners. Velvety Tree Ants, in recent years, have become a frequent invader in California homes. These ants give off a rotten coconut smell when crushed and are often referred to as an Odorous House Ant. We give them other names too like sugar ants or piss ants. How did we get some of these names? I was suprised to find that Piss ant is derived from the Middle English word "Pismire" which refers to the smell of formic acid ants give off and leave on the nest. Velvety Tree ants can grow rather large up to a quarter of an inch, with a dark colored head, red to yellow thorax, and covered in fine hairs. The can bite. While Velvety Tree ants typically nest in trees, the styrofoam used in building homes these days make for an easy nesting site. Contact your local pest management professional they will have the tools and training to eliminate these pests.
