    Default this can't be okay

I was in 1912 house today and found that the mid efficiency gas furnace in the basement vents into one side of the chimney. (the right side) There was no vent piping in the chimney anywhere, this can't be okay? Can it?

You are correct, it's not correct. Look up the manufacturer of the furnace and download its instal guidelines and it will tell you exactly how it should be vented.

A stainless steel liner would be required from furnace to top of chimney.
