    Looks like 2 sections of heating duct modified to fit the chase.

    What happens to the masonry as those screws rust and expand?

    What happens when the wire rusts through?


    I would recommend replacement with a correct cap. I would assume that there is a concrete cap under that sheet metal that has deteriorated, why not replace the damaged cap with a proper concrete cap.


    BTW, damaged caps can allow for damage to the tile flue liner. What did it look like? Even minor spalling of a liner is detrimental.
