    I supose it is considered decorative.

    The angle cut on the end exposes the end grain of the board to water encouraging rot.

    Architectural feature?

    As Bruce said, it exposes more of the end grain, however, that is rotting out where the vertical jamb trim meets it and not at that exposed end grain.
