I believe that is actually a nail bin or barrell.

Now its a termite monitoring tool.

Thats funny, a few years ago I called some of those out among other things for a SE and guess what. They had no problem at all with an old nail barrel filled with concrete. So I had to assume that not all SE's are created equal and made an addendum to my report indicating that I disagreed.

Would you call it if it was a Sonotube?

    Unorthodox doesn't necessarily mean ineffective.

I'd write the non attachment or lack of footer if it doesn't have one, but I can't find fault with using a barrel for a form.

We don't have termites. We have winter instead.

Chad, what you use for a form is not the question. It's what's under that form as in "footing" that was my concern. A leaning support is suspect in any case.

Billy, that's the city. It's south. I'm not kidding; except for tiny little 'hot spots' that are no bigger than a neighborhood there just aren't any termites around.

If it is a cast-in-place piling, it needs no footing under it (but I doubt it is a cast-in-place piling), however, regardless of the form or if it is a piling, it will also be required to have steel in it, and I doubt that does.

Jerry, do you think they may have left some nails in the barrel instead of rebar? haha. Yes, that is also one of my concerns when i see these. What happens when the termites decide winters over and the barrel splits?
Chad, I've been wrong many times but are there any Termite Companies in your area and if so, do they also go on vacation for the winter because if they do I'm moving to rochester and opening one up. What a great deal.
I'm not far from you and the Termites in my area work year round.
I don't, but they do. Really just interested in why they would not be in your area Chad, Sticking my foot in my mouth is just a habit. Sorry , Wayne

I'm with Rick on this and can see the day when the first termite scout finds that pier post and yells out; "all aboard!"

Actually, they had already found it. The wood on the exterior has had termites, but they did not build tues cross the top to get to the girder above it.

I thought someone would say: 'There are steel hoops there ... you can see them.'
