    Default Cracked Fire Brick

I know it's not brick. I just don't know what it is supposed to be called. I see this pretty often. Do you folks call out for it to be replaced?

I call them refractory brick panels and rarely see a fireplace that has them where at least 1 of the panels is not broken.

No replacement unless it is not staying in place.
Wider cracks or chunks missing or falling of, yes, replace it.

I do not call for replacement with cracks like that. In fact, some manufacturer's instructions even state that small cracks are typical and not a problem (my wording, not theirs).

Firebox liners are what most Mfg call them. Patching the crack can be done but likely will fall out in a season or two and won't match the color. Also for the inspectors, most of the non Mfg replacement panels are only 1" thick vs 1 1/2" or 2" for some fireplaces.
