Default Safe Pans under laundry equipment.

Is a safe pan required by code?
    Code reference if possible?

Most areas not required, check local code. I always recommend them in my report when there are finished spaces below. Here is a link to another forum:

For today's 24inch front load washer there is PanStand. PanSand was developed for 24 inch laundry as most are installed in hi-rise buildings n tight spaces and todays models handle family size loads.
There is an increase in 24" front load laundry as they also save water and are easy to stack saving more space. wwwelpproducts.com
