Default Pex water line entry to slab house.

Saw this at a house a week ago. The main water line is exposed with the insulation removed. It enters the garage wall to the secondary shut off valve. Shouldn't this be entered into the house in a sleeve or a least buried? Also, what are the insulation requirements for below the frost line? The plumber came over, looked at it and spray foamed the area. How wrong is that!

    Zurn Pex manual:

    1. IMPORTANT – Zurn PEX:
      • should not be stored or installed where it will be exposed to direct orindirect ultraviolet light (i.e. sunlight).

Be sure to protect pipe with plastic sleeveswhere it enters and leaves the slab.

        Don’t crush it.

        Don’t scratch it.

Penetration of Basement or Foundation Walls
When Zurn PEX is run through a basement or foundation wall, it mustbe protected by a rigid sleeve that spans the distance from within the wallout to the undisturbed soil in the pipe trench. The purpose of this pro-tective sleeve is to prevent shearing of the PEX tubing at the wall in theevent there is settlement in the backfill around the wall. At the point wherethe sleeve terminates inside the foundation or wall, the space between theZurn PEX and the sleeve should be sealed to prevent leakage into the building.

Note: Petroleum based caulks or sealants should not come in directcontact with Zurn PEX.

The insulation and burial requirements would be the same as any other pipe for your area.

Zurn have been involved in a class action suite.
    Not all PEX is Zurn.

It is what rays are in sun light.
When exposed to sunlight for an extended amount of time, PEX piping can break down.
Like any plastic pipe, exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light or sunlight causes the molecular structure to break down.

Most PEX piping manufacturers only allow 30-60 days of exposure for normal piping, and up to 6 months of exposure for PEX plumbing that has had ultraviolet stabilizers added during production. I

n a similar manner, PEX piping by itself cannot be used outdoors exposed to sunlight. For this kind of use, PEX piping must be used in a protective sleeve.

To test PEX piping for sunlight exposure, ASTM F2657 (Standard Test Method for Outdoor Weathering Exposure of Cross-linked Polyethylene [PEX] Tubing), is used and the oxidative results are compared to ASTM F876 (Standard Specification For Cross-Linked Polyethylene [PEX] Tubing). (
