Default Chimney sweeping and fire safety

Just a reminder to all - if you burn wood for heat, get that chimney cleaned properly or risk losing your home.
The chimney in this picture could have burned the house down, just lucky that time and neglected after the fact.

Last night, a motor home parked in a driveway caught fire 2 blocks from my son's house. Maybe relatives visiting Randy Quaid style? Firemen controlled the blaze and the motor home was gutted in 10 minutes.

Chimney fires are unheard of in the Denver area even when burning wood was allowed. Still, once or twice a year, I'll see a chimney that seems to have an excess of buildup. Some years ago, one of our TV stations did an "investigative" piece on chimney sweeping and found that every chimney sweep in the piece thought that the cleaned chimney needed cleaning.

If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

The city of Montreal is fast-tracking its plan to ban open fireplaces within city limits. Only certain wood burning appliances can heat homes. http://www.montrealnews.net/index.php/sid/235726793

Yes it was like a scene from a Xmas movie, but the owner wasn't laughing.

Sure they need to clean up the air, and open fireplaces waste wood. Where I see the worst creosote buldup, though, is where people have airtight woodstoves and slow fires with wet wood.
