Smile Opinions on profession or occupation

In your opinion, is Home Inspection a profession or an occupation?

One of the distinctions, some make, between an occupation and a profession is that an occupation refers to doing mainly physical work and a profession refers to doing mainly mental work.

    A HI does both.

So does that mean that Michelangelo and Leonardo had occupations since they both made things with their hands?

A profession is an occupation, but an occupation is not a profession.

I suspect you may be thinking of trade vs profession?

Typically, a "trade" is considered as making/doing something (plumbers, electricians, roofers, carpenters auto mechanics, etc).

Typically, a "profession" is considered as requiring many years of schooling (doctors, nurses, etc, in the medical profession; lawyers, judges, etc; CPAs, occupations like those).

Home inspection started out as something short of a "profession, then home inspectors began advancing toward becoming a "profession" ... then sometime in the early 2000s, someone came along and began churning out "home inspectors" with few (if any) qualifications, even proclaiming many as "masters", and the downward spiral away from being a "profession" began.

There still are many home inspectors who could say that they are "professionals", regrettably, though, there are a lot of bottom feeders out there who are anything but professional.

Elizabeth, go for the top rung (as you are doing) and become a professional home inspector.

Around here people generally consider something a profession once a license is involved.
As Jerry mentioned for some of us its a profession. For others its somewhere between an occupation and a way to scam easy money from homebuyers who are either too cheap or too uninformed to know any better.
As in any industry, once you get involved and experienced you'll learn who the professionals are and who the putzes are.

They make expertise their specialty, professionals know their trade stay up to date and become an expert in the skills and tools neccesary to do their job.

Professionals do more than expected, they are not bound by a clock.

Do what they say and say what they do, professionals deliver on promises made, they talk the talk and can and do walk the walk.

I thought doctors and lawyers were considered as being professionals? But they don't meet your description.
