    Default why the corrosion?

My search for a main water supply cutoff found this device (pressure regulator) with a corroded connection to copper supply line. Why is it corroded and leaking?

    Galvanic reaction..........dis-similar metals.

Exactly my thinking, but what is that device?

Looks like a pressure regulator to me. Strange place for it. I'm in Phoenix though so they are almost always outside where the water main comes s into the house.

Looks like we are in the crawl space, so that would be the riser coming up from the meter.

Looks like copper to a galvanized steel nipple to a pressure regulator and back to copper.

As previously stated - galvanic reaction (rusting through) due to dissimilar metals.

Is that a basement or crawl space ? And is that a relatively newer build ?

    Thanks for the replies.

1975 ranch on crawl. Because it is an active leak I called for a plumber to go under there and fix the leak, and install a main cutoff on the riser.

Always interesting to see photos from other inspections.

No floor insulation or sill plate under the floor framing?

Wall is capped by 4" solid block, no sill plate and no anchors.
