Hi there,

Has anyone seen anything like this before? (see attached photos).

Location is second floor bedroom, exterior facing wall, old house (c. 1926). Strange red-brown crud poking under the crown molding. It's dry and crumbly. There is a chimney on/behind that wall (you can see it in the wider photograph).

On the wall to the right, there is a dry yellow powder/crud coming through a narrow crack in the lath and plaster. Washroom with shower is behind that wall.

Any ideas about what this is? (two different things?). My guess is maybe moisture-caused efflorescence that is picking up dirt/crud in the wall and carrying it through the cracks.

Also, any ideas of how to seal/treat this?

Thanks so much!
