    Default galvanized nails at ridge

These were not covered with caulk or parging, were exposed and already backing out. I usually see stainless nails/screws but not galvanized. Any specific problems with galvanized nails?

    Asphalt composition shingle or tile?

Neither should be left exposed, though.

tile, no one uses ridge tiles down here so they are butted together and nailed down at the pre-drilled holes.

To my knowledge, that is not allowed.

Neither is leaving nails exposed. That is what the minimum 3" head lap is for, to provide water shedding for the top of the tile and for over the nails. While the nails *should be* driven through a bed of roof cement, they can still leak there, keeping most of the water off is critical.

What manufacturer of tiles is typically used, so we can download and print the installation instructions to bring with us (I may already have them on my computer) - that is the tell all ... the installation instructions and what they say.

Galvanized nails are fine. The only place there should be any nails to caulk over should be at the end of the run. The overlapping shingles should cover all the nails along the run.
Usually I find if the nails are backing out, it's because the nails are too short and only biting into the shingles/felt and not biting into the plywood.
But hey, Jerry's on the case. You've got it covered.

Exposed galvanized nails are not. Heck, exposed stainless steel nails are not either.

The nails should be covered and protected, even at the end of the run (talking about tile roofs here, and most other roofs for that matter).

    Jerome,

Reading the FRSA/TRI Model Tile Guidelines - August 2005 (latest version I could find):

In the Instructions for Hip and Ridge Attachment Sections of the FRSA/TRI "Concrete and Clay Roof Tile Installation Manual", section 4.:

    4. Hip and Ridge Tile Attachment Systems
NOTE: This document was written for projects utilizing hip and ridge tile. For mitered hip and ridge applications refer to the tile manufacturers recommendations.

Meaning not using hip and ridge tiles are allowed ... but ONLY IF applied in accordance with the tile manufacturers recommendations.

That means the builder will need to provide us the manufacturer of the tile, and a copy of the manufactures recommendations - if there are no ridge tiles on that house tomorrow.

Yep, it did, and the supt. said it was Entegra tile when I asked about the manufacturer ... here is their web site and installation instructions: Welcome to Entegra

    http://www.entegra.com/Documents/FloridaManual.pdf

Which is the same installation manual I got the above ...

    ... from.

And I don't see anything in there regarding *NOT* using ridge tiles.

Give them (Entegra) a call tomorrow morning and ask if they have an installation manual which specifies "For mitered hip and ridge applications refer to the tile manufacturers recommendations.", if they do not, well ... ... that means it is not allowed.
