    Default Log home chinking

I inspected a log home yesterday and the logs were missing chinking. The gaps between the logs were about a 1/16 inch. Should there be chinking? Some larger gaps had chinking.

    Depends....

Fully Scribed, also called Swedish Coped, Scandinavian Scribed and Double Scribed does not require chinking. When properly constructed they do not require any visible chinking. This is what your picture looks like.

They fit flush and are held in place by a tongue and groove design. This locks out the air and weather. Most of the time a sealant is placed in the groove to help lock out the weather. This is the most common type that I see and is what most of the newer log homes are built.
