Default Expansion Tanks On Cold Water Lines

I thought water heater expansion tanks had to be on the Hot water line. I found two installations today with the tank on the cold water line. The first photo, the tank was connected to the main water line for the home. Any thoughts?

I can't imagine that it would really matter. I guess you could refer to the manufacturer's installation instructions.

They say cold water side, a few may allow on hot water side, however, they also state shorter life if on the hot side, however ...

They should not be mounted with their weight off a tee like that.

Is that home made connection to the draft hood acceptable?

Leaking because of lack of proper support on the tank or leaking because of all the polybutylene piping?

What is not even close, I am lost. Yes the PB is in bad shape, even with the copper fittings. The manifold was corroded.
