Thread: Roof Trusses Bearing

The following Roof Truss connection was made on a new house under construction. The 2x4 ledger strip is nailed to the LVL. No other support. Is this acceptable?

Quite possibly okay if ... IF ... if that ledger was SYP ... and IF it was bolted / nailed as specified to the member it is attached to .. and IF it was done in accordance with the approved truss engineering plan.

As Jerry mentioned possible but highly unlikely. Require Developer to provide approved plans by licensed architect and review what is on those plans.

I was looking on my phone earlier - now on my computer ... and I will add another caveat: those trusses still don't look like they were field cut to fit that way ... but if they were field cut ...

Whenever you see engineered trusses ... the key word in that is "engineered" and the "engineering" is all important. It all depends on what the engineering states.

No approved engineering available, have a structural engineer design appropriate repairs (and "no repairs needed" may be "appropriate" ... all based on the signed and sealed engineer's letter).

If there is approved engineering available (and there should be as engineered trusses are an engineered system), then it all depends on what the engineering shows.

It is not uncommon to have heel bearing trusses like that for various situations ... but the trusses are not to be field modified to be like that (and those do not look like they were cut off in the field).

I agree, the shop drawings from the manufacturer should show the support location conditions. I have never seen a truss bearing condition where the support is on the end grain of the wood as shown in the photo. I would be skeptical. Also, the vertical web must be laterally braced.

Bearing would be the same as for joists. 1.5"

Cornice overhang? Likely not much load.

Likely trusses require further fastening. ie: Mechanical hangers at the LVL.
Ledger are used in deck. Same principle for the trusses I believe.

I would look at/for;a. Fastener placement/spacing, b.Faster type, size and c. Count.

LVL; Crown should face up. Doulded up; should be laminated/fastened together crowns facing each other opposing any bow.
