Joist question
Is this type of joist rated for exterior exposure. Several joists were sistered under a hot tub and the water from the tub was deteriorating the joist. But,I was curious what everyone knows about these.
Thanks

Re: Joist question
Wow, all kinds of problems there....
Leaking tub of some type
Boring in the lower 1/3 of the joists
And no, I'd say that's not an 'outdoor' piece of lumber. However, I think the decking might give out before the joist.... kind of a race, really
That's a glue-lam of sorts, definitely not intended for outdoor use... under a hot tub.

Re: Joist question
Second PDF posted by Billy says PSL for exterior use.
Rusty nails not good.
Is deck bolted to house. Proper flashings?

Re: Joist question
Thanks for the info. I spoke to a rep today and he said they have to be wolmanized for exterior use. Also the hole drilled is not an issue. Thanks for the web site, very helpful.

Re: Joist question
If those drilled holes are within 2 inches of the bottom of those framing support members its a violation of IBC 2308.10.4. (2007 CBC same)

Re: Joist question
Jerry,
What if the joists are sistered, does that negate the detrimental effects of holes being drilled in the lower third.
