I called out the TPR valve on this water heater as improper as I was trained that you weren't allowed to use "Extensions" because the standard sensing element might not get far enough into the tank to be effective.

I know there are TPR valves with "longer" sensing elements available, but don't know how I would identify them... and this just didn't look proper. The sellers plumber looked at it and originally said everything was fine... I am hoping he put that in writing, but may not have...

What would you have called out or written?

PS...the excess pipe dope doesn't count...

Here are some Watts T&P relief valves with the extended sensor:
- Temperature and Pressure Relief Valves, Water Safety & Flow Control, Watts (http://www.watts.com/pages/_products_sub.asp?catId=64&parCat=294)

Were you able to see the model number of that valve? The extended sensor one are all XL numbers.

I couldn't get back to where I could get a clear view of the Model#... I might be able to take a picture "blind" and capture it. I get a chance later today as I got called back for a "Re-inspection".

Wish I could find the old illustration that showed NOT to use extensions....

For comparison to OP pict. notice the difference.

That is one model, there are multiple models with extension thermostats - the OP photos shows a body style somewhat similar to the 100XL, LF100XL, LF10XL, LF1XL and others.

Why does it look like one of these, 30540is screwed in to one of these?

30541Is it possible the Manufacturer designed it that way?

I would recommend looking at the Manufactures recommendation for this item. :)
